Obiettivi
An introductory course of Combustion Theory where the basic combustion phenomena are described using asymptotic techniques based on the disparity of the time and space scales involved.
Programma del corso
Thermodynamics of reactive mixtures;
conservation equations for the flow of reactive mixtures;
transport phenomena and chemical kinetics;
homogeneous combustion;
well stirred reactors;
ignition and thermal explosions;
combustion waves;
Rankine-Hugoniot diagram;
deflagrations and detonations;
structure of premixed flames with Arrhenius kinetics;
high activation energy asymptotics;
stability of premixed flames;
hydrodynamic and thermo-diffusive instabilities;
Markstein length;
diffusion-controlled combustion;
Burke-Schumann limit;
strained diffusion flames;
the ignition regime, premixed regime and extinction regime;
vaporization and combustion of droplets;
diffusion flames in jets and plumes;
ignition fronts (triple flames) in mixing layers;
flame anchored in the near wake of an injector.
